"The test of a great hotel is whether you think about it after you've left. At Borgo San Felice, you'll be thinking about it before the taxi reaches the main road."

There are hotels in Tuscany, and then there are places that make you forget the word hotel entirely. At Borgo San Felice, a Relais & Châteaux property carved from an entire medieval hamlet, you don't check in so much as move in. The cobblestone lanes are yours. The piazza is yours. The vineyards pressing against the stone walls in every direction — those too, in every way that matters.

The 29 rooms and 31 suites are distributed throughout the borgo itself, giving guests a chance to explore tiny medieval streets, a beautiful rose garden, a flourishing vegetable garden, and the countryside beyond the hamlet's walls. Rooms carry the honest vocabulary of Tuscany — beamed ceilings, terracotta floors, stone arches — without the clutter of misguided rustic theatre. This is a place that trusts the bones of the building. It's right to do so.

The Table

This is where Borgo San Felice earns its serious reputation. Poggio Rosso, the Michelin-starred flagship, is led by Chef Stelios Sakalis, whose background includes stints with Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal. His cooking is rooted in Tuscany but unafraid of the wider world — a modern take on Tuscan classics, created using produce from the hotel's organic kitchen garden as well as meat and poultry from the farm. This is not the kind of Michelin kitchen that performs for its own pleasure. It performs for yours.

For evenings when the mood calls for something less ceremonial, the Osteria del Grigio offers a more informal atmosphere on a shady terrace immersed in the gardens and vineyards — pici al ragù, ribollita, the kind of Tuscan cooking that reminds you why this region's food endures. The Osteria also runs a cooking school, should you want to take something useful home beyond memories.

The Bar

Evenings begin with aperitivo on the terrace. Guests gather as the last light slips behind the hills, a spritz or a glass of San Felice's own Chianti in hand. It is convivial, unhurried, and elegant — a pause that feels both communal and luxurious, and a reminder that Italian hospitality is as much about timing as it is about taste. There is also a piano bar within the central courtyard manor — quieter, warmer, the right place for a late Brunello and no particular agenda.

The Wine

Inside the wine bar, guests can taste fine wines from the San Felice Winery, famous for its Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. The estate produces its own Il Grigio Riserva, and the cellar is exceptional — deep, properly curated, and staffed by people who understand what they're pouring.

Tours & Experiences

Experiences include vineyard and cellar tours, wine tasting sessions in the picturesque villages of Chianti, cooking classes at the Michelin restaurant, and hiking or biking the trails. For those who want to push further, eBikes can be taken out into the Chianti hills toward Castello di Brolio, and private car or Vespa hire is available for the surrounding countryside. There is even a helipad — should you arrive the way this place deserves.

Room Pick

A suite with vineyard views. The borgo layout means rooms vary considerably — ask specifically for one that faces the vines rather than the internal lanes. The difference in the morning light alone justifies the request.

Best For

Couples on a serious trip, wine-focused travelers who want depth rather than novelty, and anyone who has ever imagined what it would feel like to simply live in Tuscany for a few days.

Worth Knowing

Borgo San Felice holds a Zero Waste Hotel Certification and operates on 100% renewable energy — sustainability worn quietly, the way it should be. The property is approximately 30 minutes from Siena and an hour from Florence, making day trips entirely feasible without the borgo ever feeling like a base camp.

The test of a great hotel is whether you think about it after you've left. At Borgo San Felice, you'll be thinking about it before the taxi reaches the main road.
