"You sit on your terrace with a glass of Malvasia and watch Stromboli exhale. There is no itinerary for this. There doesn't need to be."

The Tasca d'Almerita family have been making wine in Sicily since 1830. They know the island's soil the way other people know their own handwriting — its moods, its generosity, its stubbornness. When they chose Salina for a wine estate, they chose the right island. The Malvasia grape has grown here since Greek settlers brought it in the sixth century BC, and Capofaro — built around a 19th-century lighthouse on the island's northeastern headland — is where that long story finds its most beautiful expression.

Twenty-five cottages in whitewashed Aeolian style are scattered across fifteen acres of vineyard, each one low, thick-walled, and shaded by the traditional reed canopies that the islands have used against the heat for centuries. The sea is everywhere. Stromboli sits on the horizon, close enough to watch erupt on clear nights. Panarea glitters to the south. The light here — and this is not hyperbole — is different. It has a quality that painters have been failing to reproduce for centuries.

Rooms

Twenty-five rooms across nine categories, each with a private terrace facing either the vineyard or the sea. The Junior Suite is the one to book — thirty to forty square metres, sea views, a terrace wide enough to actually live on, and the particular satisfaction of waking up surrounded by vines. The design is understated in the way that only genuine confidence produces: whitewashed walls, simple local materials, nothing extraneous. The Tasca d'Almerita touch is everywhere — a bottle of their wine waiting on arrival, small touches that signal a family who understands hospitality as an expression of character rather than a service transaction.

Food & Drink

Chef Manco's kitchen operates on a short-kilometer philosophy — the herbs, vegetables, and capers come from the estate's own gardens, the fish from local boats, the wine from the vines outside the window. The result is cooking that tastes unmistakably of this place. Dinner on the restaurant terrace, with Stromboli active in the middle distance and the sky going dark above the archipelago, is one of those meals that redefines what a meal can be. The sunset wine tasting — three glasses of Capofaro Malvasia with island nibbles on the terrace — should be reserved weeks in advance. It is the correct way to end an afternoon on Salina.

The Experience

The estate organises boat excursions around Salina and to the neighbouring islands aboard the Don Felipe motor yacht — private, unhurried, the right pace for this part of the world. Scooter hire is available for the island's cliff roads. The property's position on the northeastern tip means the wind arrives first and the crowds don't. Massages, yoga, and cooking classes can be arranged on site. The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle to Santa Marina and Malfa for guests who want the town without the logistics.

Worth Knowing

Capofaro is seasonal and books quickly — particularly July and August, when the island fills with Italians who know exactly what they're doing. The shuttle from Santa Marina on arrival is complimentary and well-organised; use it. Mobile signal is intentionally limited in parts of the resort. This is a feature, not a flaw.
