"Chianti has a thousand beautiful places to stay. Castello di Spaltenna is one of the handful that actually feels like it belongs here."
Gaiole in Chianti sits in the quieter, less-visited eastern edge of the Classico zone — further from the tour buses, closer to what Chianti actually is. The road up to Castello di Spaltenna winds through olive groves and cypress trees and deposits you at the gate of a monastery that has been on this hill since the tenth century. The church next door still holds services. The bell still rings. This is either charming or alarming depending on how early it happens.
The castle has been a hotel for decades now, but the conversion has been done with unusual honesty. The stone walls are the original stone walls. The vaulted ceilings in the restaurant are the original vaulted ceilings. The sense of history is not manufactured — it simply exists, in the way that things built to last a thousand years tend to.
The Rooms
Thirty-seven rooms and suites, each one different. Classic rooms are compact but characterful — stone floors, traditional Tuscan fabrics, windows that frame the valley like paintings. Superior rooms and suites add space, private terraces, and in some cases, vineyard views that make the upgrade entirely justified. A word of warning the property itself notes — there are no elevators. The stairs are part of the experience. If that's a concern, mention it at booking and they will find you something accessible.
Food & Drink
Three dining options, which is unusual and welcome. Il Pievano holds a Michelin star and operates in the castle's historic hall — the menu moves through creative reinterpretations of Tuscan tradition with the confidence of a kitchen that knows exactly what it is doing. La Terrazza, open for lunch, sits under stone vaulted ceilings overlooking the Sangiovese vineyards — the setting alone justifies the meal. L'Osteria runs as a sophisticated pop-up for five months of the year, serving the regional classics without apology. The wine cellar runs to hundreds of labels, including estate-grown Chianti Classico that you can taste before you buy.
The Experience
Two pools — one outdoor with a waterfall and sun terrace, one indoor heated for the winter months. A full spa. Tennis courts. Bike rental for the roads between hill towns. Wine tastings can be arranged at the property or at neighbouring estates — the staff know the producers personally, which matters. The town of Gaiole is a five-minute walk downhill, small enough to cover in twenty minutes and pleasant enough to linger in for an hour.
Worth Knowing
The breakfast — served on the veranda with views across the valley — is consistently cited as one of the best hotel breakfasts in the region. Do not skip it. Book Il Pievano in advance even if you are a hotel guest. The Michelin star fills it quickly, and eating in the castle hall by candlelight is the kind of thing you will mention for years.
"Some hotels in Chianti trade on the view. Castello di Spaltenna has the view, the food, the wine, and a thousand years of stone behind it. The trade is entirely in your favour."
