"Florence has been producing masterpieces since 1473. This building is one of them."

The Four Seasons Firenze announces itself with an unassuming door on a quiet street. You could walk past it. Most people do. Then you step inside and find yourself in the courtyard of a Medici palazzo, light pouring through a glass ceiling onto frescoed walls and Renaissance statues, and Bacchus presiding over the whole thing as if nothing about this is unusual. It isn't, here. This is simply what Florence looks like when it isn't trying.

The Property:

Built by the Medici family starting in 1473, the hotel occupies two buildings — Palazzo della Gherardesca and the 16th-century Palazzo del Nero — with 115 rooms between them, original marble, hand-painted frescoes, and a private Renaissance chapel that may be the most beautiful room in any hotel in Italy. The hotel sits within Florence's largest private garden — an oasis just outside the bustling heart of the city, with the Duomo and Uffizi a leisurely walk away.

The Rooms:

Rooms divide between the two palazzos — both exceptional, both different in character. Gherardesca rooms tend toward the grand and frescoed; Palazzo del Nero is slightly more intimate. All are dressed in Italian linens, marble bathrooms, and the kind of quiet that comes from walls built to last five centuries. Garden-facing rooms are the ones to request — waking up to ten acres of private Florentine garden is not something the rest of the city can offer.

Food & Drink:

The restaurant Il Palagio holds a Michelin star and a dining room that doubles as a gallery of Renaissance art. The bar is one of the better places in Florence for a late afternoon Negroni — unhurried, beautifully staffed, and largely unknown to the tourist crowd outside the walls. Breakfast in the garden in May, when the roses are out, is the kind of morning that resets your expectations permanently.

The Experience:

The spa is among the largest in Florence. The garden — ten acres of it, inside the city walls — is the real luxury. A private pool, e-bikes for exploring the city, and a level of service that anticipates rather than reacts. The Renaissance chapel within the property can be reserved for private dining — one of the most remarkable rooms in any hotel anywhere. The location is slightly removed from the Duomo crowds, which is either a disadvantage or the entire point, depending on what kind of traveller you are.

Worth Knowing:

Rates range from around €600 per night in low season to over €2,000 in high season — book well ahead for spring and summer. The garden is accessible to hotel guests at all hours. If the Renaissance chapel dinner is available during your stay, book it. It is the kind of experience that people talk about for years.

Most hotels in Florence show you the Renaissance. This one lets you sleep inside it.
