Grand Hotel Castrocaro

Long before wellness became a marketing word, Castrocaro was already in the business of curing people. The Grand Hotel opened in 1938 to give an international clientele somewhere fitting to take the town's salsobromoiodic thermal waters — and Tito Chini, the Art Deco master brought in to decorate it, treated water itself as the subject: ceramic friezes, painted glass, an entire building conceived as a tribute to the elixir of life. Umberto di Savoia cut the ribbon. The result still stands, largely untouched, in the Tuscan-Romagna foothills.
