"Pope Alexander VII built this palazzo as a wedding gift. The bride was fortunate. So are you."
In 1668 Pope Alexander VII gave this palazzo to his niece Olimpia as a wedding gift on the occasion of her marriage to a Sienese aristocrat. It was, by any measure, an extravagant gesture — a building of genuine magnificence on the city's main street, steps from the Piazza del Campo, with frescoed ceilings and proportions that announced the importance of its occupants to everyone who passed. The Pope had good taste. He also understood real estate.
The Grand Hotel Continental is now the only five-star hotel inside Siena's medieval walls, which is either a remarkable achievement or a commentary on how seriously Siena takes change. Either way, it means that guests who want to wake up inside the city — not outside it, not in the countryside nearby, but inside the walls where the Palio runs and the contrade still maintain their medieval loyalties — have exactly one option at this level. It is a good option.
The Rooms
Fifty-one rooms and suites, each individually dressed in period furniture, antique objects, and the kind of frescoed ceilings that require you to spend the first ten minutes simply looking upward. The original Tuscan cotto tile floors and finishings in porcelain, marble, and travertine set the register for the whole operation — this is not a modern hotel wearing historical costume but a historical building that has been made comfortable for contemporary guests. The Noble Junior Suite runs to 700 square feet. The Panoramic Suite has a terrace over the medieval skyline. The Deluxe rooms with terrace offer Siena views that make aperitivo on the balcony a non-negotiable evening activity. There is no fitness centre — this is a palazzo, not a resort — but there is a glass-domed courtyard that handles breakfast and afternoon drinks with the quiet confidence of a space that has been receiving guests since the seventeenth century.
Food & Drink
Sapordivino — the hotel's restaurant and wine bar — serves contemporary Tuscan cooking in a setting of considerable elegance, with a menu that moves through the region's ingredients with the intelligence the location demands. The wine cellar is carved into the base of a medieval tower, its thick stone walls dating to the 13th century, and houses a collection of Tuscan labels that justifies a dedicated tasting session before dinner. The signature cocktail is the Vin Santo Swing — a nod to the region's most traditional dessert wine, reinterpreted at the bar with the kind of playfulness that serious places earn the right to occasional.
The Experience
The Piazza del Campo is a three-minute walk. The cathedral is five minutes. The city's seventeen contrade — medieval neighbourhoods that still maintain their own flags, churches, and fierce Palio rivalries — are all around you, their identities visible in the banners hanging from the buildings and the coats of arms above the doorways. The concierge arranges wine tastings, private city tours, and Palio ticket procurement for guests fortunate enough to be in Siena on July 2nd or August 16th. The hotel's position makes the Palio experience — which is extraordinary even for those with no particular interest in horse racing — entirely accessible.
Worth Knowing
The Palio dates book out years in advance. If your visit coincides with either race, secure tickets through the hotel concierge as early as possible — the experience of watching from a private window or balcony above the campo is categorically different from standing in the crowd, and the hotel has relationships that make it possible. The breakfast has received occasional criticism for freshness — a minor note in the context of the overall experience, but worth mentioning. Valet parking is available at extra cost, as it must be in a city where cars and medieval street plans are perpetually in conflict.
"Siena has been frozen in the thirteenth century since the day it lost to Florence. The Grand Hotel Continental has been making that suspension of time very comfortable since 1668."
