"The oldest hotel in Taormina has had a century and a half to get this right. It has."

The Grand Hotel Timeo opened in 1873, making it the first hotel ever built in Taormina and one of the oldest continuously operating luxury hotels in Sicily. D.H. Lawrence stayed here. Oscar Wilde came. Truman Capote sat on the terrace and wrote. The list of guests reads like a syllabus for a twentieth century literature course, which tells you something about the kind of place this is — not a hotel that performs culture, but one that has absorbed it over a hundred and fifty years of receiving people who came to Sicily to think.

Belmond manages the property with their characteristic understanding that the building is the product and their job is to serve it rather than impose on it. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely historic without feeling tired — the frescoed ceilings, the tiered gardens fragrant with magnolias and bougainvillea, the panoramic terrace that opens onto what may be the finest view in Taormina.

The Rooms

Seventy rooms and suites, each individually furnished in the Sicilian baroque manner — antiques, rich fabrics, the kind of detail that reveals a property that has been refining its aesthetic for a very long time. Panoramic rooms face the Greek theatre and the sea. Garden rooms look onto the terraced gardens. The suites add space and private terraces with views that justify every additional euro. Bathrooms are marble throughout. The beds have the particular comfort of a hotel that has been putting guests to sleep for a hundred and fifty years and has learned from all of them.

Food & Drink

Otto Geleng — named for the nineteenth century German painter who helped put Taormina on the Grand Tour map — holds a Michelin star and a terrace above the theatre that makes dinner feel like an event. The menu moves through Sicilian tradition with the precision of a kitchen that takes its ingredients personally and its setting seriously. Breakfast on the same terrace, with Etna catching the morning light, is one of those meals that reorganises your understanding of what a hotel morning should feel like. The bar handles aperitivo with the unhurried confidence of a place that has been doing this since before aperitivo was a marketing concept.

The Experience

The Greek theatre is a three-minute walk from the hotel gates — close enough to visit twice, far enough to feel like a destination. The hotel's sister property, Villa Sant'Andrea on the beach at Mazzarò, is accessible by shuttle and gives guests access to a private beach without leaving the Belmond fold. The concierge arranges Etna excursions, private boat hire, and tickets to the theatre's summer performance season — which runs from June to August and includes opera, theatre, and film against the backdrop of the volcano and the sea.

Worth Knowing

Request a panoramic room or suite explicitly — not all rooms face the theatre. The summer performance season at the Greek theatre books out months in advance — the concierge can sometimes source tickets that are no longer publicly available. Villa Sant'Andrea shuttle runs regularly but book your beach days in advance during peak season.

"Taormina has been the most dramatic town in Sicily for two thousand years. The Grand Hotel Timeo has had the best seat in the house for a hundred and fifty of them."
