Grand Hotel Tremezzo

There is a particular quality of light on Lake Como in the early morning, before the ferries start and the day-trippers arrive from Milan. The water goes completely still. The mountains on the far shore turn from grey to green to gold in about twenty minutes. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo has been watching this happen since 1910, and it has never once grown tired of it.

The property sits directly on the western shore, opposite Bellagio, which is the best view on the lake and the hotel knows it. The floating pool on the lake itself — a T-shaped platform that appears to sit directly on the water with the Alps rising behind it — is one of the more quietly spectacular things you will encounter at any hotel in Italy. Most guests spend most of their days there, and nobody blames them.

The Rooms

Rooms are dressed in the colours of the lake — blues, greens, creams — with antiques and fine prints that feel accumulated rather than staged. Lake-facing rooms have balconies over the water. The mountain-facing rooms look onto the gardens and the pool terrace. Both are beautiful. The lake-facing rooms are the ones to insist on.

Food & Drink

The restaurant operates at a level that takes the cooking seriously without making the guest feel tested. The saffron risotto is the dish to order. The wine list leans into the northern Italian producers — Franciacorta, Bardolino, Lugana — that most Italian wine lists outside the region ignore entirely. Breakfast on the terrace with the lake below is the kind of morning that reorganises your priorities permanently.

The Experience

Bellagio is a ten-minute boat ride across the water — the hotel can arrange it. Varenna, Menaggio, and the Villa del Balbianello are all reachable by ferry from the village dock. The hotel provides all of it with the unhurried confidence of a place that has been arranging Lake Como days for over a century.

Worth Knowing

The hotel is large by Como standards, which occasionally shows in the service. It is not the intimate hideaway that Il Sereno offers. But what it provides instead is character, history, and a warmth that smaller, newer properties are still working out how to manufacture. This is the real thing. Book it for the pool. Stay for everything else.
