Grand Universe Lucca

Lucca is the kind of city that makes you wonder why Florence gets all the attention. The walls — sixteen metres of Renaissance fortification, wide enough at the top for a tree-lined promenade — have kept the city intact for four centuries. Inside them, the streets are narrow and medieval and entirely car-free. The Grand Universe sits at the heart of it all, in a building that has been absorbing Lucchese life since 1857, when it opened as the city's first grand hotel.

The Marriott Autograph Collection flag might give purists pause. It needn't. The management here — led by a director of operations who appears in almost every guest review by name, which tells you something about the culture of the place — runs it with the warmth and attention of an independent hotel. The reviews from couples rate it 9.2 out of 10. That is not a number that happens without genuine care.

The Rooms

Fifty-five rooms and nine suites, each dressed in crisp white linens and contemporary Italian furnishings that respect the building's age without being enslaved to it. Standard rooms overlook the historic streets or the piazza below. The deep window sills double as reading seats — a detail that reveals the hotel's understanding of what guests actually want from a Lucca morning. Suites range from the intimate Junior Suite to the two-floor Maestro Suite, which feels more like a Lucchese townhouse than a hotel room. No parking onsite — but you won't need a car. That's rather the point.

Food & Drink

Three distinct options, which is generous for a 55-room property. Legacy Bistro Wine Bar serves contemporary regional cooking — Tuscan ragù, grilled octopus, fresh pasta paired with local wines recommended by staff who know what they're talking about. The Symphony Lounge handles cocktails with the seriousness they deserve. And above it all, the Sommità rooftop bar — twenty seats maximum, champagne and small plates, views across the rooftops to the Teatro del Giglio and the cathedral — is the place to be at sunset in Lucca. Book it before you arrive. The city discovers it and fills it quickly.

The Experience

The hotel arranges bike hire for the walls — the correct Lucca activity, and the one that takes twenty minutes and leaves you understanding the city completely. Wine tastings, olive oil tours, and day trips to Pisa, Florence, and the Garfagnana valley can all be arranged. The Guinigi Tower, with its famous rooftop garden of oak trees, is a five-minute walk. The Roman amphitheatre — now a piazza lined with restaurants — is the same. Lucca is small enough to cover entirely on foot and interesting enough to keep you occupied for three days.

Worth Knowing

No spa on site — this is a city hotel, not a resort, and guests who need thermal pools and treatment rooms should look at Bagni di Pisa nearby. The rooftop bar is open to the public as well as guests, which occasionally means competition for the best seats at peak hours. Arrive early and order the champagne. The views from the terrace at dusk, with the old town going golden below you, are the kind that make you book the same room for next year before you've checked out of this one.
