"The correct side of the river. The correct pace. The correct Florence."
Hotel Lungarno is a favorite of the LussoIQ team. Sitting outside on the terrace, watching the Arno slip under the Ponte Vecchio, while sipping a Spritz and snacking on green olives ... well, it's an experience that—much like Florence itself—cannot be described in mere words.
The Lungarno sits on the south bank of the Arno, which is the right bank. Across the water is the Florence of the guidebooks — the Uffizi queues, the selfie sticks at the Duomo, the streets so thick with tourists in July you can barely move. Here, on the Oltrarno side, the city breathes differently. The hotel is owned by the Ferragamo family, which tells you something about the aesthetic intelligence at work.
The Property:
The building is modern by Florentine standards — 1960s, designed with the restraint that Florentines apply to everything they care about. Sixty-eight rooms and suites, most of them facing the river. The art collection throughout is exceptional — original works by Cocteau, Picasso, and a rotating selection of contemporary Italian artists. The lobby is small and calm. The bar is exactly right.
The Rooms:
River-facing rooms are the only rooms worth booking. The views across to the Ponte Vecchio and the northern bank are the kind that make you rearrange your morning around coffee on the terrace. Rooms are dressed in navy and cream — nautical without being obvious about it — with Florentine fabrics and bathrooms finished in pietra serena. The Arno Suite has floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace over the water. Book it if it's available.
Food & Drink:
Borgo San Jacopo, the hotel's restaurant, holds a Michelin star and a terrace that sits literally over the river. The breakfast is served with the kind of unhurried elegance that makes you reconsider your entire approach to mornings. For dinner beyond the hotel, walk five minutes into the Oltrarno — the trattorias on Via dei Serragli and around Piazza Santo Spirito serve food that has nothing to prove and everything to offer.
The Experience:
The Oltrarno is the experience. Pitti Palace is a ten-minute walk. The artisan workshops on Borgo San Frediano — goldsmiths, bookbinders, furniture restorers — are still operating as they have for generations. Around the corner from the hotel, the Basilica of Santo Spirito holds a wooden crucifix carved by a seventeen-year-old Michelangelo in 1493 — one of his earliest works, almost unknown, hanging quietly in the sacristy while the crowds queue for David across the river. And Via della Vigna Nuova, a few streets north, is where Lisa Gherardini — the woman who became the Mona Lisa — grew up. Florence has layers. Hotel Lungarno puts you in exactly the right one.
Worth Knowing:
Request a river-facing room explicitly — not all rooms face the Arno. The terrace at Borgo San Jacopo at sunset, with the Ponte Vecchio going gold in the light, is worth the reservation alone. Book the restaurant before you book the room.
"Everyone comes to Florence to see the art. The lucky ones stay on the right side of the river and become part of it."
