Hotel Signum

Salina is the island the others don't talk about enough. No active volcano, no celebrity circus, no famous mud baths — just two extinct peaks, terraced vineyards, caper fields, and a particular quiet that the other Aeolian islands never quite manage. Hotel Signum sits in Malfa, in the upper part of the island, and you feel it before you see it. The laneways leading down to the entrance smell of lemon trees and honeysuckle. Cats move across the terracotta tiles without urgency. The Caruso family — Michele, Clara, and their children — have been building this place since 1988, starting from a ruin and adding rooms one by one as love and instinct dictated. It shows in the best possible way. This is not a hotel that was designed. It was grown.

Rooms

Thirty rooms, no two alike, each one a considered arrangement of period furniture, handwoven textiles, and light that comes through wide windows or spills across private terraces. The Suite with Sea View Terrace is the room — 55 square metres of original Aeolian character, cementine tiled floors, beamed ceilings, a king bed, a whirlpool bath, and a terrace that faces Stromboli and Panarea with nothing between you and the horizon. Book it early. It goes first.

Food & Drink

Martina Caruso earned her Michelin star young and was named Italy's best female chef in 2019. Her cooking is rooted entirely in Salina — the capers, the Malvasia, the catch brought in from the port below — but handled with a lightness and precision that makes every plate feel like a discovery. Three terraces for dining depending on the season: the pergola terrace for long summer evenings, the garden veranda for spring and autumn, the bar terrace for aperitivo with Stromboli erupting gently in the distance. Raffaele Caruso's cocktail list, built around herbs and fruits from the hotel garden, is something to linger over.

The Experience

The spa — Salus per Aquam — draws on Salina's geothermal inheritance. Treatments in a 19th-century copper tub. Thermal rose salt beds. Alternating-temperature hydrotherapy pools. An ice massage that makes the heat outside feel invented. The hotel organises private boat excursions to the other islands — ask about the fisherman's boats for two. Vespas are available for exploring Salina's cliff roads. The sunset at Pollara, on the island's western crater, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Worth Knowing

Signum is seasonal — open March through October. The hotel closes in winter and the island changes with it. Standard rooms are intimate rather than spacious; the suite categories are where the real magic lives. Reserve the restaurant before you arrive, not after — Martina's tables fill quickly, especially in July and August.
