"Most hotels give you a room with a view. Monteverdi gives you an entire village."
Monteverdi is not quite a hotel. It is a medieval hilltop village — Castiglioncello del Trinoro, population negligible — that an American owner named Michael Cioffi bought, restored with extraordinary care, and opened to guests who understood what they were walking into. The Val d'Orcia spreads below in every direction. The silence is the kind that takes a day to get used to.
The Property:
Monteverdi surrounds guests with the breathtaking Val d'Orcia countryside, with cutting-edge style that marries the ancient and the contemporary. In total there are 18 rooms and 3 suites, with individual farmhouses on the edge of the village transformed into villa suites of two to six bedrooms. In 2023, Monteverdi unveiled new rooms and suites, a meeting and retreat center, and a new Spa & Wellness Center blending ancient beauty rituals with modern treatments. The art gallery hosts exhibitions from international artists. A concert series brings musicians into the beautifully restored village church — one of the more unexpected pleasures in the Val d'Orcia.
The Rooms:
Rooms are individually designed — a masterful blend of ancient and modern, with ceilings supported by original wooden beams and interiors featuring splendid art pieces. The Panoramic Suites face the valley directly. Villa suites on the edge of the village offer the most privacy and space — ideal for groups or families who want Tuscany entirely to themselves. All rooms are dressed with the restraint of people who understood that the view is the decoration.
Food & Drink:
The cuisine is fresh and creative, infused with locally grown herbs, olives, and tomatoes, pecorino from Pienza, fresh local lamb, and prosciutto cured from wild boar that roam the surrounding woods. The wine cellar is stocked with the finest regional appellations. The Culinary Academy offers hands-on cooking classes and chef's table experiences — a farm-to-table program with its own purpose-built kitchen. The lounge and terrace bar has sweeping views across Tuscany and operates as the informal heart of the property at aperitivo hour.
The Experience:
The enoteca features the territory's best wines — many winemakers are personal friends of the owner. Wine tasting, olive oil tasting, the spa water circuit, archaeological tours of an Etruscan dig the owner has sponsored on the property — Monteverdi offers more to do than most guests can fit into a week. The infinity pool sits at the edge of the village with the Val d'Orcia below it. The string quartet concerts in the church are worth planning your stay around.
Worth Knowing:
The location is genuinely remote — which is exactly the point. A car is essential. Pienza is twenty minutes, Montalcino thirty. The property skews toward American guests, which gives it a warmth and informality that more buttoned-up Italian luxury properties sometimes lack. Book the chef's table dinner in advance — it fills quickly and it is, by all accounts, the meal of the trip.
Tuscany has thousands of beautiful places to stay. Monteverdi is one of the few that feels like it was built for you specifically.
