"Nineteen rooms, one quiet piazza, and two thousand years of Lucca beneath your feet."

There are hotels that impress and hotels that welcome. Palazzo Dipinto does the second thing, which is considerably harder. Nineteen rooms in a meticulously renovated 13th-century palazzo in the heart of Lucca's walled centre — whitewashed walls, exposed beams, polished wooden floors, bathrooms that reviewers describe as luxurious with the specificity of people who mean it. Couples rate it 9.8 out of 10 for location. That number requires no commentary.

The building has been here since the thirteenth century. The renovation, completed in 2017, treats that history with intelligence — contemporary in feel, careful with the bones. The San Frediano Basilica is 150 metres away. The Roman amphitheatre piazza is a short walk. The city walls, which deserve at least one circumnavigation on foot or by bicycle, are closer still.

The Rooms

Nineteen rooms and suites, each dressed in whitewashed walls, exposed ceiling beams, and bathrooms that arrive with the kind of shower that makes checkout feel premature. Rooms overlooking the piazza are the ones to request — quiet by Lucca standards, which means genuinely quiet, with the particular stillness of a medieval city that has had the wisdom to ban cars entirely. The beds are large and seriously comfortable. The cleanliness is remarked upon in almost every review, which at this level should be a given but apparently still earns gratitude.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is included and consistently praised — a proper Italian spread that sets the morning up without excess. The on-site bar handles aperitivo with the quiet confidence of a place that knows its neighbourhood well. For dinner, the staff know exactly where to send you — Lucca's restaurant scene, concentrated within the walls, rewards the local recommendation over the TripAdvisor search.

The Experience

Ask to see the Roman ruins in the basement. This is not advertised. The hotel sits on the remains of a Roman domus — an ancient domestic structure that the staff will show guests who think to request it. It is the kind of detail that separates a hotel stay from a memory. Beyond that, the city itself is the experience — the walls, the Guinigi Tower with its rooftop oak trees, the amphitheatre piazza, the Puccini museum. Palazzo Dipinto provides the ideal base from which to let Lucca unfold at its own pace, which is the only pace worth having.

Worth Knowing

Parking is €25 per day — not unreasonable but worth factoring in. The hotel is small and fills quickly, particularly in spring and autumn when Lucca is at its most beautiful. Book early. The value for the location and quality is exceptional — this is the LussoIQ pick for travellers who want Lucca done properly without the overhead of a full luxury resort.

"Lucca is the most liveable city in Tuscany. Palazzo Dipinto is the most liveable hotel in Lucca."
