"You lie in bed in the morning looking at the ceiling. It is enough."
Modica is not a town you pass through. You climb up into it — stone steps, narrow streets, the baroque cathedral of San Giorgio rising above everything like an argument for God — and then you stop moving entirely. Palazzo Failla is where you should be when that happens.
The Failla family opened their 18th-century palazzo to guests without removing themselves from it. Signor Failla is a presence — charming, attentive, the kind of host who remembers your name before you've given it. The building itself has been restored with obvious care and zero desire to modernize what doesn't need modernizing. Pitchstone floors. Handmade Sicilian maiolica. Vault ceilings frescoed in the manner of the period. Wrought iron details. The atmosphere of a noble house that simply never stopped being one.
Rooms
Ten rooms, no two identical. The Superior Double with Terrace is the one — ceiling heights that make you recalculate what a room can feel like, antique furniture with genuine provenance, and a terrace that puts you above the rooftops of Modica Alta. Some bathrooms are compact; the architecture more than compensates.
Food & Drink
The Locanda del Colonnello serves traditional Sicilian cuisine with a modern hand — 300 labels on the wine list, local produce throughout, and a courtyard for summer dinners. Breakfast is the meal guests talk about: house-made pastries, almond milk, the best coffee in a town that takes coffee seriously. Staff organize chocolate-making sessions in a town that is, after all, the world capital of a particular kind of dark, spiced chocolate that has been made the same way since the Spanish brought the recipe from Mexico in the 17th century.
The Experience
Step outside and you are five minutes from the Castle of the Counts and the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Scicli, Ragusa Ibla, Noto, and the coast are all within easy reach. The hotel has its own private garage — a meaningful detail in a town built on near-vertical terrain where parking is essentially theoretical.
Worth Knowing
This is Modica Alta — elevated, quiet, removed from the main shopping street below. If mobility is a concern, the steps are real. If it isn't, the position is perfect. The annex rooms are comfortable but lack the atmospheric charge of the main palazzo; book the main building.
