"The water has been running at 37 degrees since before the Etruscans arrived. It knows something you don't."
The thermal springs at Saturnia have been running continuously since before anyone thought to write it down. The Etruscans used them. The Romans built infrastructure around them. The medieval village of Saturnia grew up nearby and watched the water come and go for a thousand years without particular surprise. The resort that eventually formed around the springs has been welcoming guests since 1919, and in 2020 underwent a thorough redesign that retained the travertine stone architecture and the old-world atmosphere while adding the modern amenities that guests at this price point reasonably expect.
The setting is the primary luxury. One hundred and twenty hectares of Maremma countryside, halfway between Florence and Rome, with the medieval village a short walk away and the Pitigliano tufa towns thirty minutes by car. The thermal pools anchor everything — natural hot spring water at a constant 37 degrees, Roman baths, outdoor pools that steam in the cooler months, and a spa with 53 treatment rooms that takes the business of wellness as seriously as the Maremma takes most things.
The Rooms
Rooms are spacious, well-dressed in Tuscan materials, and comfortable in the way that a resort designed for extended stays tends to be. Spring View rooms face the thermal pool park — worth requesting. The 2020 renovation brought modern comforts without erasing the property's heritage character. A note of honesty: some guests have flagged inconsistency in maintenance and cleanliness at this price point. It is not universal but worth mentioning.
Food & Drink
Two restaurants and a juice bar at poolside. The main restaurant treats the Maremma larder — local Morellino di Scansano, Pecorino, wild boar — with the respect it deserves. La Stellata, the resort's trattoria on the golf course, serves the authentic flavours of the region with considerably less formality and is frequently the better meal. Breakfast is generous, well-sourced, and served in a room with views across the grounds.
The Experience
The spa is the reason to come. Fifty-three treatment rooms, comprehensive wellness programmes, Roman baths, sauna, Turkish bath, and the thermal pools — outdoor and indoor — that have been the point of this place since before the resort existed. An 18-hole GEO-certified golf course winds through the estate. Mountain bikes, e-bikes, tennis, hiking trails, and horse riding are all available. The concierge can arrange Etruscan site visits, Pitigliano day trips, and wine tasting at local Morellino producers.
Worth Knowing
Service has received mixed reviews — warm and attentive from some, inconsistent from others. This is a large resort operation and the experience can vary. The thermal pools are also accessible to day visitors during certain hours, which can affect the sense of exclusivity during peak season. Come in shoulder season — April, May, September, October — when the resort runs quieter and the Maremma countryside is at its most beautiful. The free waterfalls at the public Cascate del Mulino, a few minutes' drive away, are genuinely extraordinary and entirely free — a detail worth mentioning to guests who want the Saturnia experience without the resort price tag.
"The water has been here longer than the hotel, longer than the village, longer than most of recorded history. Whatever it is you came to fix, it has seen worse."
