RIMINI & THE RIVIERA

The Riviera Romagnola

Where the Adriatic first learned to be beautiful

Rimini has always lived two lives at once. By day, it is the birthplace of Fellini — arcades, a Roman bridge still carrying traffic since Augustus, a seafront that has drawn Italian and European aristocracy since the first bathing establishment opened its doors in 1843. By night, it becomes something else entirely: the Adriatic's original playground, the place that invented Italian summer as we know it.

Riccione picks up the thread with a quieter kind of glamour — an Art Nouveau elegance that once hosted the Duce's foreign dignitaries and now hosts anyone willing to slow down for it. Cattolica closes the run gently, a working fishing harbor with none of the need to perform. Together they form the Riviera Romagnola — 90 kilometers of coastline that has been perfecting the art of the seaside holiday for over 180 years.

This is not the hush of Portofino or the drama of the Amalfi cliffs. It is louder, warmer, and — if you know where to stay — every bit as elegant.

WHEN TO COME

Late June or early September for warm sea and thinner crowds. July and August bring the whole of Northern Italy to the beach — book well ahead or skip those weeks entirely.

HOW TO MOVE

Rimini sits on the main Adriatic rail line, 1.5 hours from Bologna and 3 from Venice. Federico Fellini Airport (RMI) is 15 minutes from the city center; Bologna's BLQ is roughly an hour by car.

WHO IT'S FOR

Fellini devotees, grand-hotel romantics, and anyone who wants their beach holiday with a side of Belle Époque history and after-dark energy.

WHERE TO STAY

Riviera Romagnola's Finest

Hotel Carducci 76

Cattolica

"The Carducci 76 doesn't ask to be noticed. It simply keeps doing, quietly and well, what it's done since 1920 — which is exactly the point."

A restored 1920s villa on Cattolica's promenade, blending art deco elegance with a deluxe wellness centre and sea-facing pool.

Grand Hotel Des Bains

Riccione

"This is the rare hotel where you could skip the beach entirely and not feel shortchanged."

An Art Nouveau residence built in the early 1900s as Riccione's grand bathhouse, restored with a spa, four restaurants, and the golden beach two minutes away.

Grand Hotel Rimini

Rimini

"This is the only hotel in Rimini with a private beach, and one of the only Art Nouveau buildings on the Adriatic still standing exactly as it was."

Rimini's only five-star hotel and only private beach, a national monument since 1994 and the Art Nouveau icon that raised Fellini's imagination.

PRIVATE BOAT TOUR

Riviera Romagnola Half-Day Boat Tour

Set sail from Milano Marittima aboard the Motonave Ghibli for an afternoon along the Adriatic — past Cesenatico's fishing boats, out to the offshore gas platforms rising from the sea, with fried fish, wine, and a bit of onboard dancing to send you home.
